The AroundTownKids Allen Special Events Section features "special" events for kids & families in Allen such as kids concerts, Disney on Ice shows, kids theatre productions etc.  These Events are located in Allen and in the DFW Area.

AKS Gem Show

Description: A great line up of exhibitors selling estate jewelry, fine jewelry, fashion jewelry, including jewelry manufacturers, and more beads and supplies than you'll ever see.  This show is open to the public. Buyers will not find better deals anywhere. Beading classes, Cab cutting and demonstrations by Jurassic Jewelry.
Cost: Admission is $5 at the door.

Auditions for Children's Chorus of Collin County

Boys and girls in grades 4-9 are invited to call to schedule an audition.  Auditions for the 2009-2010 Chorus year will be July 25 and August 15 at St. Andrew United Methodist Church, 5810 W. Plano Parkway. To schedule an audition or to learn more about the Chorus visit the website.

Butterflies!

Date & Time: May 2nd to July 5th regular zoo hours
Location: Dallas Zoo

Description: Enter an interactive butterfly exhibit that will have you all aflutter as you walk through a lushly landscaped setting with a bubbling fountain in the background and hundreds of butterflies flitting about. The seasonal exhibit features butterflies throughout their life cycle and more than a dozen Texas native species will be displayed, including monarch butterflies, zebra long wings, Gulf fritillaries, question marks, red admirals, and black, pipevine, and giant swallowtails. Located behind the Large Mammal Building in ZooNorth!
Cost: Admission is free with regular Zoo admission.

Chitty Chitty Bang Bang

Ghosts from the Bayou

The Zoo is located three miles south of downtown Dallas, on I-35E at the Marsalis exit.
Description: The legendary white creature with piercing pink eyes rising from the new swamp in the Pierre A. Fontaine Bird & Reptile Building is not a ghost. That fact becomes obvious when 9-foot Boudreaux opens his massive jaws to take a fish or piece of chicken from his keeper. The male albino American alligator joins two traditionally pigmented female alligators and other swamp residents in the new Ghosts from the Bayou exhibit at the Dallas Zoo, which opens on April 18, the first weekend of Dallas Roars!

Great Train Robberies

Date & Time: Through Sept. 7
Location: Grapevine Vintage Railroad Train Depot

Description: Experience the great train robbery on the Grapevine to Fort Worth train trip.  Shortly after your departure from the Grapevine depot, cowboys on horseback will rob your train with guns blazing.  The train stops to allow the villains on board, and then the fun really begins.

Guided Garden Walks

Location: Texas Discovery Gardens at Fair Park

Description: Third Saturday Garden Walks give you an in-depth look at garden ecology, maintenance strategies, and other interesting topics. Stroll through the Gardens with knowledgeable staff and local experts for about an hour and learn gardening tips and tricks.

Cost: Free with Paid Garden Admission: $3/adults, $1.50 for kids ages 3-11, and $2 for seniors.

Bug Hunt on Saturday, June 20 from 10 am to 11 am - Discover bugs in their living rooms as we hunt in the soil, under leaves, and on bark. See familiar ones you might find in your backyard and learn about new, colorful creatures.  Program appropriate for ages 2 and up.

Herbs and Herb Container Gardens on Saturday, July 18 from 10 am to 11 am - Home-grown herbs can enhance your culinary creations and even your health. Join us on a tour of our herb plants in our Scent Garden and our Heirloom Rose Garden. We will demonstrate herb container gardening techniques, showing visitors how to group companion herbs for moisture and soil preferences. These can be grown on your patio or in your yard.  Program appropriate for ages 12 and up.
Caterpillar Crawl on Saturday, August 15 from 10 am to 11 am - Go on a caterpillar search as we show you creepy crawly wonders! This is a great introduction to the world of butterflies. Program appropriate for ages 2 and up.
Texas Trees Garden Walk on Saturday, November 7 from 10 am to 11 am - Join staff horticulturist Randy Johnson on this annual tour of native trees. Learn proper planting and care techniques. You'll finish the tour just in time to go to the Fall Plant Sale! Program appropriate for ages 8 and up.

Science of Spying

Description: The interactive Science of Spying exhibit is part James Bond, part Jack Bauer and part “Lie to Me.” It gives eager spy-wannabes of all ages an opportunity to experience the latest spy gadgets and techniques - including remote-control spy planes, night-vision goggles, biometric scanning, infiltrating computer systems and the dolphin spy camera. They also learn how to detect liars, crack safes and find hidden clues.  Visitors begin to find out about the plans of the shadowy organization OSTECK and follow the clues to uncover the secret location of its HQ.
Cost: Admission is free for members.  Non-members:  adults - $13.75, children 3 to 11 - $9.75, youth 12 to 18 - $12, seniors 62 and over, and students 18 and over with an ID - $12.50.  Admission includes Science of Spying and all regular museum exhibits.

Storybook Playhouses at the Arboretum

Description: Storybook Playhouses, based on classical children's storybooks, is a unique opportunity to enhance the visitor experience and for local architects to have their creativity on display.  The Playhouses will tie into educational literacy targeted to children and will be on display in various locations throughout the garden.

The King and I

Description: Rodgers and Hammerstein's famous Broadway classic, based on the book by Magaret Landon, Anna and the King of Siam, tells the story of a British school teacher hired to educate the King's children.

“No Hand Idle: Domestic Arts in the 19th Century”

Date & Time: Through June 30th; Tuesday – Saturday, 10 am–4 pm; Sunday, Noon–4 pm
Location: Dallas Heritage Village
Address: 1515 South Harwood, Dallas
Description: Amongst the 1840 to 1910 historic homes and commercial buildings are 25 quilts from Dallas Heritage Village’s collection representing the progression of the quilt as not only a way to stay warm but as an art form. Included in the exhibit are patchwork quilts created by Dallas’ pioneer women to the more luxurious quilts of the Victorian era. Other forms of domestic arts like gardening and woodworking of the 19th century will also be displayed and demonstrated. “No Hand Idle” is part of Quilt Mania II, a Dallas wide event where Dallas Heritage Village is one of the 18 cultural institutional partners.
Cost: Free with museum admission of $7 for adults, $5 for seniors 65+ and $4 for children ages 4-12. Children 3 and under and Dallas Heritage Village members are free.
