This Week's Local Business Review

Stingray Bay at the Dallas Zoo

Location: Dallas Zoo
Address: 650 S. R.L. Thornton Freeway, Dallas

My aunt and I took my children to the Dallas Zoo last week.  Never having been, we were very thankful to the chance to go.  We had heard about their hands-on Stingray Exhibit.  At first my kids were apprehensive, due to the "sting" in the name "stingrays".  I explained that the barbs of the rays have been clipped.  That was all that needed to be said for my sons to have the confidence to touch the stingrays.

When we entered the creatively decorated exhibit, my kids were delighted to see Sponge Bob and Patrick inflatables.  At the exhibit, customers can choose to watch a 3-D movie of Sponge Bob and Patrick.  We choose to touch the rays since we had ridden Spongebob at Six Flags.  It cost my kids $2.50 each to touch the rays.  The food is $1, if you choose to feed them.  When you have food, of course they come to you!

There is a low-lying open aquarium filled with salt-water and sand.  After we had washed our hands, we proceeded to the edge to touch these graceful creatures.  I even touched them myself and was surprised how slimy they are!  They swim in a loop so they make the circuit to come back around for touching and feeding. The younger kids can safely lean over the edge a bit to get better access.

My kids were amazed to see them swim over to them.  They “oohed and aahed” at the experience.   Being able to touch these delicate animals really connected my kids to them.  They even begged me to buy them a stuffed animal stingray (which I did).

Afterwards, we toured the zoo.  There were many animals to see.  We went on the monorail of Africa, which was neat.  We visited the Reptile House.  My kids were allowed to touch a small python being held by a zoo keeper.  We enjoyed seeing the wild cats, giraffe, elephant, and monkeys.

Besides the Stingray Exhibit, my kids’ favorite part was the children's zoo.  The kids were able to run around, play and pet animals: bunnies, guinea pigs, and sheep.  We had a really enjoyable time.  It is a great place to entertain the kids (and adults) for hours.

The Stingray Exhibit runs until the end of September so be sure to check them out before they leave!  This is the only exhibit of its type in North Texas.

Zoo admission must be purchased to see the Stingray exhibit so get in free -  Sign Up for FREE Dallas Zoo Tickets Today!
